NTH_QUO.TXT Table ============================================================== MAIL-PRODUCTION.COM 04/Jul/2005 22:50 ============================================================== Summary: For file divisions based on Nths, absolute quotients are not useful because they are based on decimal math, and samples per hundred, or per thousand, are too large to yield the best representations possible. After finding an absolute quotient, use the table below to arrive at a lowest common denominator [LCD]. e.g.: a sample of 1/2 is far more penetrating than 50/100 or a 49/99, which the hand calculator cannot reduce. 50/100 or 500/1000 may, thought, greatly preserve postal discounts which 1/2 could destroy. If you use a LCD which is slightly less than the absolute quotient shown in your calculator, say for instance 120000/205643, for a quotient of 0.583535, look in the QUO column for a choice near 0.583535. You will see these choices: 53 91 0.582418 7 12 0.583333 yields 119,958 records 52 89 0.584270 If this sample group is divided further into 6 smaller groups of 20000, the 42 missing records will be shared across each of those 6 groups. In this case, use 7/12, which is slightly less than the absolute value needed, and it will yield samples which are 6 records short of 20000, but are perfect within each 12 records throughout the file of 205,643. Afterward, manually add 6 records to each sample group, making each group a perfect 20000. If you choose a LCD slightly greater than absolute, some records will have to be manually cut by the same means, and there can be a small distortion of samples for the tail ends. ============================================================== Notes: It is important to have your encoding file presorted in the manner needed, say, in this case, ZIP + MCD. This assures each ZIP will have the best distribution of each mailcode [MCD]. Unfortunately, this often-requested method overlooks the fact that to gain a rather meaningless maximum sample correctness, a very useful maximum postal savings is forfeited. In other words, repeatedly breaking up a file's batched makeup discounts in not worth the very slight sampling skews encountered. It is normally better to preserve most earned postal credits first, and afterward apply all MCD sampling priorities by running, say, for example, ZIP + RTE + MCD, or, ZIP + EXT + MCD, and then follow with larger selection bytes. Samples that observe all discounts are possible by selecting full packages from presorted postal bases. Tip: You can use a presorted encoding file for this work and afterward post all final mailcodes into the production file with the matching unique REC_NO of these two files. This permits all accounting to checked while leaving the production file safely alone.
